Librotraficante! Y Que?  Claire Massey provides An Analysis of the Movement

Claire Massey, a Doctoral Candidate and Research Assistant at Universitat des Saarlandes in Germany, is traveling throughout the Southwest USA - following the trail of the Librotraficante Movement to smuggle banned books into Arizona.

On Monday, September 21st, Claire sat down in Chuco (El Paso) La Mujer Obrera (LMO) to visit the location of the largest gathering on the Librotraficante trail... only to discover that the City of El Paso has shut down the original location of LMO and for political reasons, the Underground Library at the YWCA has also been dismantled. The Racial Justice position has been vacant for several months.

Claire is on her way to Tucson, to visit with the original MAS (Mexican American Studies) educators of TUSD and is hoping to interview those responsible for making the ONLY educational program proven to close the achievement gap for marginalized students - illegal.

The Chican@/Latin@ student demographic is the fastest growing in the nation while also being the largest group pushed out of public education institutions. If implemented correctly, as was done in TUSD - but remains illegal today - the 46% high school completion rate increases to 98%.  Students graduate ready for college, many with scholarships in-hand. Read the Empirical Analysis here.

You can scroll down to read why and how the state of Arizona banned culture, language and identity. Presumptuously, to make America great... again?

Check out Claire's analysis...
